Having taken a short while to come to the boil this season, Augsburg continued on an upward trajectory on Tuesday night as they defeated last season’s runners-up RB Leipzig 1-0 in front of a home crowd. That’s now three wins on the bounce for Manuel Baum’s men, but they might not be done just yet. Against a Stuttgart side who’ve not created an amazing impression since regaining their top flight status, the visitors will surely fancy their chances of recording a fourth consecutive victory.

Stuttgart have by no means been abysmal since returning to the Bundesliga, but they’ve looked just average at best and appear to be lacking in the forward areas, at least they are the moment with a few players out injured. With this in mind, against an Augsburg side who’re flourishing right now, it’s hard to just how the hosts merit even-money favouritism, even on their own patch. At 5/2, the visitors are worth supporting to keep their pleasing run going.

Since the start of the season, it’s been clear to see that Augsburg are going to employ an attacking philosophy this season; they’ve looked to get forward at regular intervals and have created plenty of promising scoring opportunities, which is nice to see from a side who scored just 35 goals in 34 matches last season. Looking to get forward is one thing, but profiting from doing is another thing altogether. Fortunately, Baum’s side, who’ve scored eight in their last four, have been doing a very good job of finishing off their chances in recent weeks. Defensively, the visitors haven’t looked rock solid, but, as long as they continue to both create chances and score goals, their chances of winning will remain strong.

Unlike the visitors, Stuttgart have had a bit of a problem in the final third so far this season. They’ve not been completely tame, but have generally been a bit neither here nor there as far as their style goes. Creativity hasn’t been the biggest issue, but taking chances has, and could continue to be. It would appear as though the hosts have a lack of firepower, while both Carlos Mane and Daniel Ginzcek being sidelined doesn’t help. Against an Augsburg side who will come forward, the host won’t be without chances, but, whether or not they’ll have enough about them in the final third remains to be seen. On top of this, key defensive absentees could also hinder the hosts, especially since Augsburg have been thriving going forward of late. Neither Holger Badstuber nor Emiliano Insua are expected to feature here which certainly isn’t positive as far as Hannes Wolf’s team are concerned.

In reality, this is the type of league fixture where both teams should fancy it and, therefore, we could see the sort of game where the pair simply try to outscore each other. If this is to be the case, Augsburg are the team to side with. The visitors have simply had far more about them going forward so far this season. On this basis, it is a surprise that they’re as big as 5/2 in the betting. Such a price is well worth exploiting.
