Bookmaker Ratings prediction one: Chris Kirk to Win (each-way) – 36.00

Bookmaker Ratings prediction two: Gary Woodland to Win (each-way) – 31.00

Chris Kirk to Win (each-way)

For me, Chris Kirk ticks lots of boxes this week. For starters, he arrives in Texas having played some excellent stuff over the last few months, plus he has plenty of course form in the book.

T14, T7 and T5 finishes in his last four starts, the 36-year-old has his game in solid shape, while as touched on above, he knows how to get down to business at this venue, finishing T6 here last season. He also has two T8 finishes at this event since 2015, so it’s little surprise that he ranks well in terms of strokes gained on this track, ranking as the 11th best in the field for strokes gained: total here in the last five seasons, or the eighth best if we discount players who’ve not played more than four rounds during that time.

From a tee-to-green point of view the man who has four PGA Tour wins under his belt has been impressive of late, so much so that he’s currently the tenth best on tour for strokes gained: tee-to-green. Notably, only one of the nine players above him in that area will play this week. What’s also eye-catching ahead of this week’s tough green-hitting assignment is Kirk’s efforts around the green. 16th on tour right now for strokes gained: around-the-green, the man from Georgia knows how to get up and down.

All in all, with lots of the big dogs not in the lineup this week, somebody like Chris Kirk, who has been ticking along nicely and who has previous strong efforts here, can emerge as a candidate for top spot. At odds of 36.00 it’s worth betting that he does just that.

Gary Woodland to Win (each-way)

Another player who for my money holds solid claims this week is Gary Woodland. Let’s start by saying that Woodland is far too good to have his hands off silverware for too long, and after what has been quite an arduous road back from injury, the one-time major winner has started to shape as if he’s ready to start seriously challenging for titles again.

During the Florida swing, the four-time PGA Tour winner put together some pleasing efforts, finishing T5 at both the Honda and the Arnold Palmer, while his T21 at the Valspar last time out was nothing to be overly disappointed with. Such form bodes well, as does the fact that the 37-year-old finished T6 here last season when playing in this event for the first time since 2015.

With his game looking as good as it’s been since he won the US Open back in 2019, in a field missing lots of the best players in the world, Gary Woodland has a big opportunity to add a fifth tour success to his tally, and at odds of 30/1, he’s worth supporting to come out on top.

Preliminary review and tournament prediction for the Valero Texas Open

The oldest pro tournament to have been held in the same city ever since its inception, which was way back in 1922, the Valero Texas Open is a bit like the calm before the storm, as though it is an excellent tournament in its own right, it precedes the much-anticipated Masters, which is the first major of the season.

We’re looking at a field that is slightly lesser in terms of top-tier talent this week. New world number one Scottie Scheffler is just one of several top-ten players not to feature this week. In fact, the only top-ten player who’ll tee it up in San Antonio is current world number nine Rory McIlroy. Other notable inclusions are Bryson DeChambeau, Abraham Ancer, Hideki Matsuyama and last year’s winner Jordan Spieth, all of whom currently rank inside the top 20 according to the Official World Golf Ranking.

Designed by Greg Norman, the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio features narrow fairways that are hugged by trees, which suits a plotter rather than a bomber. Precision is likely to be the order of the day rather than length. Approach shots will be key, and those who thrive here tend tok hit plenty of greens in regulation, though by general PGA Tour standards, the average number of GIR hits is likely to be slightly lower. This is because the greens are tough to hit, which means that players need to not only be strong on approach but need to be getting up and done, so be on the lookout for players sharp at scrambling, and those who rate highly in terms of strokes gained: around-the-green.
