Only one of these sides has any real interest in these end of season matches as visitors Mansfield Town are chasing the play-offs whilst Morecambe are in mid-table safety with no prospects of finishing in the top seven.

Morecambe are having a terrible time at the moment having suffered five consecutive losses and no wins in six. Thankfully for them though, they have built up enough of a cushion above the bottom two to ensure they are not under the threat of relegation.

As you would expect from a team who cannot stop losing, Jim Bentley’s side are having problems at the back. This has not just been the situation in recent matches though and their record of 58 against in 38 matches as well as a clean sheet ratio of just 18% has been worrying. They have been a bit better in the final third in the last few matches and have only failed to find the back of the net on two occasions in their last nine games.

A huge problem for The Shrimps this campaign has been home form and they have the third-worst home record in the division with just 19 points taken from 19 matches. Form at the Globe Arena looks like it will not be improving any time soon either having suffered three defeats on the bounce.

Mansfield managed to secure their first win in four matches last time out with a 2-0 win over play-off occupiers Carlisle United which keeps them well within the hunt for the top seven as they currently sit 9th and just three points off Exeter City in 7th.

Defensive solidity has been the key to the Stags’ relative success this season with just 42 goals conceded in 38 – fewer than likely title winners Doncaster Rovers. Furthermore, they have kept the third-most clean sheets in the division with 14. Unfortunately for them though, these great performances at the back mean that they lack a bit of potency in the final third with their record of just 45 goals scored the worst in the top ten and even worse than some teams battling against relegation.

Steve Evans’s team have struggled on the road over the course of the season and particularly in recent matches with no wins in their last four, failing to score in any of those matches. However, going up against an out-of-form Morecambe side along with their extra motivation to make the play-offs, Mansfield could put that record right on Saturday.

Although Mansfield are having problems on their travels, as alluded to above, I think they should be able to deal with Morecambe, who are probably on the beach already. However, with their overall goal-scoring problems, I am not expecting a thrashing. ‘Mansfield to Win & Under 4.5 Goals’ looks a great bet.
