On Wednesday night, Dortmund will be hoping to strengthen their position at the top of Bundesliga. With Bayern already having dropped points, it is critical that Peter Bosz’s side continue picking up three points. Fortunately for the visitors, a match against an out of form Hamburg side represents a good opportunity, even away from home.

Having failed to take anything from their Champions League foray to Wembley, Dortmund bounced back in emphatic fashion at the weekend as they hammered a sorry-looking Koln side by five goals to nil. Such a performance was just what the doctor ordered after a disappointing night in Europe just a few days before. Against a Hamburg side who’ve looked poor since they themselves beat Koln, albeit in far less convincing fashion, a few weeks back, Dortmund really should fancy their chances of recording another pleasing win.

At odds of 11/8, there’s a touch of value about Dortmund scoring three goals, and the visitors are expected to once again outclass their opposition by having far too much quality in the final third. They may have some players missing right now, the likes of Marco Reus, Raphael Guerreiro, Sebastion Rode and Andre Schurrle are all likely to remain sidelined, but such is the strength in depth possessed by this club that they can still field a very strong side indeed. The likes of Philipp, Yarmolenko, Aubameyang and Pulisic are all fit and thriving currently, which means Hamburg could be in for a tough night.

If Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, the hosts could struggle to keep tabs on Bosz’s men. Without ever really having to extend themselves, BVB really did look imperious against a Koln side who, like Hamburg, have clear defensive deficiencies. Not only did they notch five goals, but they created an abundance of clear-cut chances, something which has been true of all their performances in the Bundesliga so far this season. Barring a 0-0 draw away at Freiburg, a match in which Wednesday’s visitors had the chances to score at least three goals, Dortmund have scored at least three goals in all but one of their Bundesliga matches so far. In itself, such a stat isn’t particularly telling, but when combined with the fact BVB have managed far more shots (and more shots on target) than anyone other than Bayern this season, things look particularly promising, especially given the manner in which the hosts have been defending of late.

Conceding goals was a big problem for Hamburg last season and it looks as though defensive solidity could remain elusive this time around too. Since beating Augsburg 1-0 on the opening day, a match in which their clean sheet wasn’t entirely warranted, Hamburg have failed to keep a clean sheet, conceding against Koln, Leipzig and Hannover. The hosts may have avoided shipping three in a single match as of yet; however, it’s early days and they’re yet to face a side of Dortmund’s pedigree. Crucially, over the last few weeks, they’ve created a poor impression defensively and are very much expected to struggle in this fixture.

All things considered, as they come off the back of a confidence-boosting victory at the weekend, Dortmund’s attacking players should be licking their lips ahead of this match and are once again expected to fill their boots. Based on what we’ve seen from this pair so far this season, a price of 11/8 on ‘Dortmund to Score Over 2.5 Goals’ seems somewhat generous and, therefore, should be exploited.
