Germany are the only side to have laid down a real marker at these finals: six goals scored and none conceded. They are often referred to as “The German Machine” and, alongside hosts France, are now considered as the main favourites to lift the trophy. If they are to go all the way they’ll have to make it past Italy here and this looks to the first serious test for Low’s team. Before now they’ve faced Ukraine, Poland, Northern Ireland and Slovakia, none of whom are considered big names, but Italy are.

Antonio Conte knows what he is doing. There were question marks over his side at the start of the tournament, particularly in terms of quality, after all Graziano Pelle, Eder and Simone Zaza are no Totti, Del Piero or Toni (strikers that won the World Cup in 2006 with Italy). However, even with a lack of big names Conte’s tactics have seen his side perform very well. They’ve played as a real team unit so far, with everybody a part of the fast moving mechanism.

Germany might be favourites for this one, but the Italians can certainly cause their opponents problems. Overall it looks too hard to predict a winner here. The angle to take in this one is corners.

Here you can see the number of corners, taken by Germany in their four EURO 2016 games:

  • vs Ukraine – 6
  • vs Poland – 8
  • vs Northern Ireland – 6
  • vs Slovakia – 8

Considering that Italy will largely leave the ball to Germany and focus on staying organised and compact, trying to hit their opponents on the counter, it’s likely that there will be several situations where a German corner is likely. If they are to enjoy possession as they have done until now then plenty of shots and crossed around the Italian box is likely. This is therefore likely to result in plenty of German corners. Over 6 corners by Germany is a good bet and is worth taking at 6/4.
