UEFA Nations League 2022/23 winner odds: Favorites and contenders to win tournament

How did the UEFA Nations League 2022 come to it’s knockout stages?

There are four leagues in the competition League A, B, C, and D and each of these leagues has four groups in them except for the League D, that has only two groups. The leaders of each of these groups in League A qualify for the UEFA Nations League finals [semi-final and final]. That obviously explains why Croatia, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands made the cut.

Croatia finished as the champions of Group 1 with 13 points from six games, a point better than Denmark in 2nd place. The Blazers competed for the top spot against the likes of Denmark, France and Austria and won four of their six games, losing one game against Austria at home in June. They were dominant in the group, hence making them one of the favourites for the trophy.

The Netherlands finished as the winners of Group 4 with 16 points without a defeat. Their recent win came last weekend against Belgium at home and it ended in a 1-0 win. They are touted as the strongest favourites to clinch the trophy. The Dutch side competed for the top spots against the likes of Belgium, Wales, and Poland.

Spain sealed their qualification to the finals on the last day of the group stage. Luis Enrique’s men raised many eyebrows after he guided the Spanish side to a tight 1-0 win at Portugal, who were the favourites to finish the group as the winners after five games though. Spain leapfrogged Cristiano Ronaldo’s side to the top spot of Group 2, having competed against the likes of Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.

Italy finished as the leaders of Group 3 with 11 points. The Italians are among the favourites, given the level of competition in their group. Roberto Mancini’s side locked horns against the likes of Hungary, Germany, and England.

It is vital that the 4th-placed team in each of Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, will be relegated to League B and the champions of League B will gain promotion to League A. Second and Third places will remain in their League. The same goes to teams in League C and D.

As a result, England, Austria, Czech Republic and Wales have been relegated to League B, while winners of League B groups Scotland, Israel, Bosnia and H and Serbia have all gained promotion to the next UEFA Nations League League A sides.

Who is favorite to win the UEFA Nations League 2022/23?

The Netherlands

The Dutch side are touted by bookmakers as the favourites to win the competition, thanks to their solid performances in the group stage. Louis van Gaal’s men showed dominance in the group stage, going unbeaten in the six games, beating an impressive side, Belgium.

Should they maintain their momentum when they come up against one of the semi-finalists, they have a strong chance of winning the title, irrespective who they meet in the semi-final.

UEFA Nations League 2022 favourites: Netherlands, Croatia, Italy or Spain?

The Netherlands have conceded six goals in six games, averaging 1 goal per game but they are outstanding going forward. Van Gaal’s side have notched in 14 goals in six games, averaging 2.33 goals per game, making them a humongous force in the opposition box.

Croatia

The Croatians are another team many are expecting to challenge for the trophy. They lost only one game in the group stage but they have a stumbling block in their quest for glory.

Luka Modric’s side was not impressive in the group stage. They managed eight goals in six games, averaging 1.33 goals per game, which is not enough to beat the Netherlands, who are averaging 2.33 goals per game. At the back, they conceded six goals, averaging 1 goal per game.

Following their recent games respectively, the Netherlands have better chances of going through to the final if they are drawn against Croatia.

Italy

The Italians are as strong as Croatia, given their strength at the back and in the attack. Italy scored eight goals but conceded seven goals, which is not good enough to come up against the Netherlands, who are hard to beat.

Roberto Mancini’s side lost a game and drew two in their six group stage games, hence further identifying them as one of the underdogs in the semi-final.

Spain

Spain earned a spot in the semi-final after beating Portugal 1-0 on Monday night. Although they shocked many fans when they beat one of the favourites for the trophy in Portugal, they are not that spectacular and would definitely struggle against either Italy, Spain or the Netherlands.

Luis Enrique’s men lost 2-1 at home to Switzerland on September 24, 2022, and they wouldn’t have been in the finals if Cristiano Ronaldo had converted half of the chances he got in against Spain.

Spain’s chances of going through to the final depends on which country they are drawn with. It would be a high mountain to climb if they got to face the Netherlands but they have a good chance of going through to the final against either Italy or Croatia.
